What is Brazilian jiujitsu?
A traditional martial art, Brazilian jiujitsu has been around since 1913. It is a centuries-old martial art and a Brazilian school of jiujitsu has been taught continuously by black-belted disciples in Brazil since 1944.
The name was inspired by the pride of the first academy that was opened in the Brazilian state of Parana: Mendes Pinto and his students (and teachers) who wanted to remember their training in the jiujitsu technique that the Indian emperor of Brazil gave to them in 1894 when the class was celebrating the ninth anniversary of the creation of the academy.
Romeo Pimenta de Melo, master of the martial art jiujitsu was one of the first black-belted masters to learn the jiujitsu technique, in the year 1903 at the Instituto Dr. Joao Chagres.
During the last century jiujitsu got bigger and bigger because the rules of fighting in Jiujitsu were changed. Today the rules of the fighting are the same as the rules of judo, judo as it was taught in the nineteenth century by the Italians, and judo as it was taught in the twentieth century by the Japanese.
Just like judo, jiujitsu has got an official world championship; it's called the Jiujitsu World Championships. It's held once every four years, and it is organised by the World Jiujitsu Federation (WJF). There are many different kinds of jiujitsu, but if you want to learn the most famous jiujitsu technique and maybe the most dangerous jiujitsu technique of all time, you should train the jiujitsu technique called the reverse shoulder throw.
